A strange but interesting month - APR 2021

Hmmm...

This month has been a bit strange. I had planned to move in one direction, but something quite different took me in another direction completely.

This month, NFT's appeared on my radar, as I suppose it appeared on many people's radars; a digital artist named Beeple sold an NFT via the auction house Christie's for $69 million US dollars.

As a brief explanation, NFT's are Non-Fungible Tokens and from what I have gathered are essentially deeds of ownership over specific digital assets.

In the context of digital art, an NFT for, let's say, 001 Random elf girl would give the owner of that NFT notional ownership of that painting. This NFT does not actually give the owner access to the copyright of that painting, but let's them say they own the digital painting. The idea still feels strange to me.

Given how NFT's have exploded on to mainstream media after the $69 million sale, and how more and more digital artists are claiming NFT's are changing their lives for the better, I've spent some time this month doing some research into them.

It appears there are upsides and downsides to NFT's and there is plenty more for me to research. For now I have opened an account on the NFT platform OpenSea.io and also the apparently more eco-friendly alternative VIV3.com.

I think I will create a blog post dedicated to NFT's and my experiences so far once I've gathered my thoughts better.

Here is a look at my OpenSea account and a few of the paintings I have listed on there.

Apparently listing does not secure them on the blockchain (where the environmental issues crop up), actually selling the NFT's on OpenSea is when the items go on the blockchain. Again, more on what this means when I write up that blog post on NFT's.
